88 Died in Kolkata AMRI Hospital Fire

was arrested on Friday, Dec 9, 2011. Six owners who was arrested named RS Goenka, Manish Goenka, SK Todi, Prasanta Goenka, Ravi Goenka and Dayananda Agarwal followed by cancellation of hospital`s license.

They had been charged of negligence, blamable homicide. All of them had surrendered at Lal Bazaar Police headquarters after the tragic incidence took place, it is worst miss-happening of the country.

Fire claimed lives of 70 patients and 3 hospital employees, which started from basement of AMRI Hospital in the 3:30 am on Friday, maximum loses there live due to suffocation.

Fire brigade reached around 4:45 am. At that time flames had spread with thick black smoke all around. AMRI 161-bed hospital is located in Dhakuria in Kolkata. Fireman smashed out window panes to get inside to save trapped ones inside the ICU, ICCU, ITU and Critical Care units.

Relative and family members of the patients said that hospital knows about the fire at about 1 am but most of employees came out to save there lives leaving patients behind them, many of them were having critical condition and could not even manage to escape.

AMRI 161-bed hospital caught fire

There was no one to assist relatives of the patients during this incidence which makes few relatives anger burst out over ‘mismanagement’, few of the suffered ones destroyed the reception at the main hospital building.  Later Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee rushed in too see the situation and ordered immediate action over hospital management and aggressive help for the suffered ones.

AMRI Hospital is jointly promoted by the RS Goenka-led Emami Group and the SK Todi-led Shrachi Group of companies. No clarification was given on the causes of fire yet, though Senior Vice President of the AMRI hospital Dr S Upadhyay claimed all the necessary fire equipment was in place.
